I’m Dr. Prashanth Parameswaran. Born and raised in Southeast Asia, I am currently the CEO and founder of ASEAN Wonk Global, a research hub which publishes the weekly ASEAN Wonk newsletter, which you can subscribe to here. I am also a fellow at the Institute for Indo-Pacific Security, a visiting practitioner at American University, an instructor at the State Department’s Foreign Service Institute and a global fellow at New York University.

I lived in Southeast Asia for nearly two decades and have over fifteen years of experience working on and in the region for think tanks, businesses and the media covering all of its eleven countries, with a focus on on topics such as great power competition, maritime security, economic statecraft, institutions, military modernization and foreign policy. My insights have been published widely in leading publications and journals such as CNN, The Washington Post, The New York Times, The Economist, The South China Morning Post, The Straits Times, Asia Policy and Contemporary Southeast Asia. I hold a Ph.D. and an M.A. from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University and a B.A. from the University of Virginia. My book Elusive Balances: Shaping U.S. Southeast Asia Strategy, developed an original framework for analyzing the commitment of major powers in regions of the world.

I founded ASEAN Wonk Global as a research hub dedicated to comprehensively analyzing Southeast Asia and the wider Indo-Pacific region, with a 360-degree, global view on risks and opportunities. Our ASEAN Wonk newsletter provides weekly expert insights and epitomizes our commitment to producing policy-relevant research, and you can subscribe here now.

Apart from writing, I also conduct grant-based research, deliver speeches at universities, think tanks and conferences, and consult for governments and companies on Southeast Asia, Asia security issues and U.S. foreign policy in the Indo-Pacific. I also publish policy reports, journal articles, and book chapters. You can follow me on LinkedIn and Twitter.
